In the Prosecutor’s Crosshairs: Workplace Safety Enforcement in Singapore and Australia (30 April 2026)
As workplace safety prosecutions continue to climb the regulatory agenda in both Singapore and Australia, the question for counsel and advisers is no longer if but how to prepare. On 30 April 2026, The Society of Construction Law - Singapore was delighted to host a seminar examining exactly that.
The session offered a practical, side-by-side comparison of Singapore's Workplace Safety and Health Act 2006 and Australia's Work Health and Safety Act 2011, with a particular focus on enforcement priorities, prosecutorial discretion, and the strategic decisions that shape the trajectory of an investigation. Key takeaways included the growing emphasis on directors' and officers' liability, and the importance of early evidence preservation.
Our sincere thanks to Mr.Johnathan Kui Bao Lee, who drew on his experience as a former prosecutor with the Ministry of Manpower to unpack the Singapore framework, and Mr. Patrick Barry, whose insights from defending serious workplace safety prosecutions in Australia brought the comparative dimension vividly to life. We are also grateful to our Chairperson, Mr. Ashok Kumar Rai, for his thoughtful opening remarks and stewardship of the discussion.
A heartfelt thank you to all delegates who joined us for the seminar, Q&A and networking buffet — your engagement made the evening a genuine success.
