Construction Law 101 (5th Run!) - 9, 14, 16, 21 October 2014
The course was split over 4 modules that spanned 4 evening sessions. The course presenters, Mohan Pillay and Teo Chen Han, experienced lawyers in the field of construction law, managed to bring across the fundamentals of construction law in an interesting way for us to grasp the difficult concepts.
The course covered topics ranging from Introduction to Construction Contracts, Sub-Contracting & Payment Principles, Default & Dispute Resolution to Security of Payment Act., being the most important concept to many. Many who attended felt that they had a better understanding of the important aspects of the Security of Payment Act and adjudication after the session. The course presenters explained the concepts clearly and substantiated with carefully prepared material, engaging examples and leading authorities. The speakers answered most of the questions raised by attendees in the best way possible by including their personal experiences and views.
Many of the attendees were contractors, quantity surveyors, engineers, and project managers from various construction related firms. It was a good opportunity to meet and build my network during the short breaks during the course..
The course allowed me to see the bigger picture and brought my appreciation of the subjects covered to a higher level. Sometimes, all we need to hear is a good summary from experienced professionals to grasp the topic better, even though you may have read about the concepts earlier. I certainly did have a better understanding about construction law at the end of the 4 day course. Though it was after office hours, I felt I had made the right decision to attend the course. I would strongly recommend Construction 101 to all practitioners in the construction industry who are interested in grasping the basic principles of construction law and who wish to expand their construction knowledge. It was definitely rewarding to attend this course.
