Council Member's Message - June 2026

Dear members and friends of SCL(S),
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the June 2026 edition of the Society of Construction Law (Singapore) newsletter. As we move into the second half of what has already been a rich and eventful year for the Society, we are delighted to share with you the latest insights and developments in construction law.
The past two months have been particularly busy for the Society. In May, we were privileged to host a well-attended seminar on ESG in Construction Law, which examined the practical implications of sustainability requirements in Singapore's built environment — from contractual frameworks and risk allocation to the rise of climate-related disputes. The seminar underscored the point made in these pages earlier this year: that the challenge has moved from policy awareness to implementation, and the construction law community has a vital role to play in that transition. We thank our speakers and attendees for making the evening such a stimulating and insightful one.
Our April seminar, "In the Prosecutor's Crosshairs: Workplace Safety Enforcement in Singapore and Australia," also generated lively discussion among the attendees. The comparative perspectives offered by our panelists highlighted both the similarities and the divergences in regulatory approaches across jurisdictions — a reminder of the value of cross-border dialogue in our field.
In this issue, as with all our publications, we are pleased to feature an article that continues to reflect the breadth and depth of our members' expertise. We trust you will find it thought-provoking and of practical relevance to your work.
Looking ahead, we have much to anticipate in the coming months. The SCL(S) 15th Annual Dinner will be held on 26 August 2026. This is always a highlight of the Society's calendar — an evening of fellowship and good cheer — and we warmly encourage all members to mark the date and join us.
Later in the year, we look forward to the SCL(S) Conference 2026, themed "Technology, Legal Innovation and Singapore's Built Future," on 17 November 2026. The Conference promises to bring together leading practitioners and industry stakeholders to explore how technology and innovation are reshaping the legal landscape of the built environment.
We continue to be encouraged by the growing engagement with our thought leadership initiatives, including the ongoing interest in the SCL(S) Protocol for the Use of Experts' Joint Statements in Arbitration. We are grateful for the support the Protocol has received and look forward to its continued adoption and discussion within the arbitration community.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support and participation in SCL(S). We hope you enjoy this edition of the newsletter, and we welcome your feedback and contributions to future issues.
